In Japan, Umeboshi plums have a long history which dates back to eighth and ninth centuries, where they were Japan's national symbol. The Samurai warrior consumed Umeboshi to combat fatigue after battle, however these days the Japanese people often eat them with rice porridge for breakfast. Umeboshi's sour taste is due to it's high concentrations of citric acid, which are believed to have a paradoxical alkalinizing effect on the body, stimulating digestion, neutralizing fatigue, and promoting the elimination of harmful toxins.
